Kindly Influence and Personal Healing in Goodnight Mister Tom - Literature Essay Samples

Child negligence can cause long term fear which may result in nightmares and flashbacks of the incident. During World War II parents in Britain often sent their children to live with foster parents in rural areas in order to escape the effects the war caused in urban cities. Goodnight Mister Tom (1981) written by Michelle Magorian is a historical fiction novel that explores the damage caused as a result of child abuse and further promotes the power of love to heal an individual, emotionally scarred from a troubled childhood. Child negligence is a form of physical and mental abuse inflicted on a minor which may have a significant effect on their identity and personality development. Willie in Goodnight Mister Tom effecting his personality, confidence and social skills extremely has been abused both physically and mentally by his disdainful mother. Willie is talking very harshly about himself as he is scared upon the expectations that he thinks Uncle Tom has set for him behaviour due to the fact that he thinks the way his mother has raised him is normal, â€Å"‘I must be good,’ he whispered urgently, ‘I must be good,’. He was such a bad boy, he knew that. Mum said she was ‘kinder’ to him than most mothers.† Willie expresses the mental abuse that he feels by him being characterised with a shy and fearful personality as he stressfully says â€Å"I must be good†, also Willie’s mother shows a form of irony by saying she was kinder then most parents de spite her being highly abusive. Mrs Veech explains in a letter to Uncle Tom that she put a leather belt in Willie’s suitcase, Ive put the belt in for when hes bad. The physical abuse inflicted onto Willie is revealed through ambiguity as it leaves readers to wonder what might happen in Willie’s household and the abuse he is subject to. Willie is hit by his mother in a dark room due to him being constantly argumentative, Something heavy hit him across the head and he sank into a cold darkness. The powerful adjective ‘heavy’ describes that Willie’s mother hit him intentionally and wanted to hurt him, also the metaphor ‘sank’ describes how Willie collapsed as the object hit him due to the powerful force of the object. Hence, Magorian’s novel reveals the harmful effects that both physical and mental abuse can have on an child’s personality and well-being. Love and kindness has the power to heal broken individuals by helping them forget about their past and by restoring the happiness in one. Goodnight Mister Tom outlines the joyfulness that Uncle Tom brings to Willie by making him feel special and appreciated through simple acts of kindness. After Willie was scared about getting beat from Uncle Tom for hurting Sammy Tom replied with kindness saying that he won’t abuse Willie, â€Å"I don’t know nothing about children, but I do know enough not to beat em and make them scared.† Tom explains in a comforting tone that he won’t beat Willie because it is simply cruel he uses a metaphor ‘I don’t know nothing about children’ which means that he is inexperienced with children and knows little however he knows it is morally wrong to beat a child. Uncle Tom was proud at the fact that Willie was able to leave Little Weirwold and go back to his mother changed and developed, Tom was terribly proud of h im but then he had been for a long time. After Willie left to go back to his mother Tom expresses with an adjective ‘terribly’ that he is very proud of Willie and has been for a long time due to his rapid development and his changing personality. After finding out that Tom was successfully able to adopt Willie he was overjoyed by the fact that he no longer had to go to his old life of being abuse, hurt and hated, do you think you can die of happiness? Its jest that I feel as if Im going to burst. Willie rhetorically questions Tom sarcastically by asking if you could die from happiness which is a metaphor that he is very happy by Tom’s kindness. Subsequently the novel exposes how love and kindness can change an individual’s personality despite a troubling past. The physical and mental abuse of Willie has had a huge effect on his personality and attitude since he was a very young child. Goodnight Mister Tom furthermore prompts readers to question child abuse and the irreversible problems that it may cause on individuals, and also how love and kindness can heal people no matter their circumstance. Child abuse can cause irreplaceable damage upon an individual that may last a lifetime.

The Coffee Shop, Avenue Coffee, Near The University Of...

After a lot of consideration and thought, I decided to study the coffee shop, Avenue Coffee, near the University of Memphis. The location was actually recommended by a fellow ethnographer in my class and I thought I would follow up with the gracious suggestion. Avenue Coffee was unfamiliar to me, and is also in a part of Memphis that I have rarely gone to. This shop was a great way to see a new part of town, but also to see what kind of local businesses have risen in Memphis. The ethnographer told me that the cafà © had a deeply rooted mission for the community of Memphis and is definitely a place in one must visit. Legalize It: The Necessity For Marijuana Law Reform When I think about social issues that should be discussed more often than they are, I think about the topic of legalization of marijuana. As a person that has consumed marijuana both in legal settings, and illegal settings, I can say that the title â€Å"illegal drug† should not apply to cannabis. The reason that I believe this is because I do not feel that marijuana is a threat to my personal safety, nor is it a threat to the safety of people that are around me if I was to be smoking it in their vicinity. I am not a violent person, and do not consider myself to be a criminal based on what plants I have smoked. The use of marijuana as an intoxicant was first documented in India around the time of 1000 B.C. and w as used mostly as a part of Hindu culture (Snyder, 125). Reasons for why the plant was used are unclear from the texts that are left behind. I would guess that it was first introduced because of the somewhat euphoric state that cannabis can induce. The marijuana was consumed in three different forms in ancient India (27). The first was called bhang, which was made from hemp and was consumed in a drink form. This was mostly consumed by the lower classes and was ingested to relieve one from the stresses of a long days work (Grinspoon, 173). The first of the other two forms was called ganja and was taken from the tops, or bud, of the plants and smoked. The last and most potent form of the marijuana was called charas and is similar to hash. The plant quickly spread from India to other areas of Asia. In China marijuana was called the â€Å"Liberator of Sin† (Fort, 15). One of the main reason for success of TMV is that they concentrate on marketing and promotion plan for their products. This is a sound strategy that brings TMV to success. This study will show the importance of marketing strategy of Viet Nam Toyota Inc. METHOD Our 5-year research of Toyota Marketing Strategies in Viet Nam began in the summer of 2005 and ended in the fall of 2010. The subjects were selected from Toyota Ben Thanh, known as the best-selling and the largest agent of Toyota in southern region. This research surveyed 100 people. The major subjects were sales representatives of the agent, staffs of the marketing department and customers. In which, 30 sales representatives were chosen on the following criteria: having good achievement in the agent and receiving good feedback from customers. 70 selected customers were those who had demand of buying car and those who were the agent’s close customers or potential customers. The instrument employed in this study was interviews and survey (questionnaire). A set of 20 questions closely linked to the study was given to each subject. The interview with some random questions was based on subject’s characteristics (e. . job, department, product evaluation, income, etc). This survey took one week to get the feedback for evaluating and judgment. The questionnaire was also performed in online version under the help of Google Docs (https://docs. google. com/) and shared on social network Google+â„ ¢. All collected data was digitalized and statistics were ma de using Microsoft ® Excel and IBM ® SPSS ® Statistics software. MATERIAL Observations were made at customers shopping at the Toyota Company in order to learn the consumers’ attentions on products and their final decisions. The opinions of customers were collected by questionnaire and interview. In the questionnaire, there are two main parts that are personal information section and research information section separated. The personal information part was designed to collect some private information of participants, particularly age, gender, and job. And the research information part which consisted of 20 research questions is divided into 4 main groups as follows: Group 1 (question 1 to 3) was designed to collect some private information of participants. Besides, it is used to define the customer’s demand and finance. From this we can find latent customers of the company. Group 2: (question 4 to 7) was to identify how customers get information about the product of Toyota companies. And we can know the marketing method Toyota company has used that brings the most effective result Group 3: (question 7 to 12) aimed at the opinions of customers after using Toyota corporations’ products. It is not only used to assess the quality, services but also the attitude of the staff. Group 4: (question 13 to 20) was used to get the complain from the customers and what they expect to the products and service in the future. From this we can identify the way to develop the company. RESULT * Part 1: Personal information Chart 1 – Gender Chart 1 indicates the participation of male and female in shopping through the Toyota system. It shows that not only women who have shopping habit but also men took a significant part of using toyota products (male accounts for 63% and female accounts for 37%). Chart 3 displays the customers’ criteria of choosing Toyota products which was divided into four main elements: benefit, price, companies’ reputation and quality. Over a half of them was preferred products’ quality (56. 25%) to price (21. 8%), companies’ reputation (12. 5%) and benefit (9. 37%). This finding shows that the consumers’ priority concern was products’ quality which conflicts with their experiences. Market Program This consists of the four marketing mix elements that are designed to fit the market in terms of their needs and ability to access such products and services. * Product Strategy The Company is believed to be moving with a strategy of mass production of which it has enabled it to sell widely in the global market. It has also included the strategy of hybrid product, where it can double the amount of production for the arising needs in the market. * Price Strategy The reputation of the Company has been developed by producing high quality vehicles that can be bought at a reasonable price. The Company has also been using tactful pricing strategies through price differentiation so that they are different from other automobile producers. * Location Strategy Being a global producer and supplier of Toyota automobiles and their components, Toyota Company has positioned itself all over the world giving it a clear cut within the market. Within three years to come, it is working towards the achievement of about 35 percent of the market share, and this will make it to be best and top supplier of automobile products. * Promotion Strategy The Company is determined to use a pricing mechanism that will give it a competitive edge over its main competitors. This is a mechanism that it is using to market itself so that it can get hold of market share that will see it better in achieving the highest level in the market. Marketing Implementation Analysis Toyotas main focus will be in reaching the new markets of China and Europe. It will also be concerned about the competition from other firms like Ford and GM. An advantage the company has is the widely differentiated product range. Establishing new factories in these new markets as well as opening up new franchises will help the company in getting an ease of penetrating the new markets Human resource is one of the most important aspects in this plan. The company should always make sure they have highly motivated staff as this is directly proportional to good production both in the qualitative and quantitative aspects. Toyota can do this by coming up with schemes of rewarding their employees like helping them own cars subsidized rates. The company should also make sure the personnel are the best in terms of technical know-how. The company needs to carry out frequent training towards this end.
